Tribute to Phia Berghout
Some of you have had the luck to be able to attend the Harpweeks held in Queekhoven, a beautiful estate in Breukelen, the Netherlands. All of this would not have been possible if Phia Berghout, with her inspiring personality, had not have organized the Harpweeks together with the Eduard van Beinum Foundation. The Harpweeks grew into the larger organization known as the World Harp Congress. The Tenth World Harp Congress in 2008 will be a jubilee event in which we would like to have a special tribute to this wonderful artist, the founder of the World Harp Congress, and also to recognize the amazing growth of the harp world to the present day.
A committee of Masumi Nagasawa, Boni Rietveld, Štefica Žužek,and Anton Sie is planning several projects for the Congress. Three concerts will be organized in honor of Phia Berghout. One will be a symphonic concert including a new piece for 28 harps. “Phia Berghout & Maria Korchinska” will be the theme of a chamber music concert, in honour of these two close friends who organized the Harpweeks together. And a special concert will be held in Breukelen, where memories will resurface and so that the new generation can experience the atmosphere of the legendary Harpweeks.
Beside these concerts we are producing an exclusive commemorative DVD and book. It will contain films, photos, testimonials to Phia Berghout and the history behind the World Harp Congress. We will be more than happy if you would like to support us by contributing to this project. We have already received some warm contributions from friends and former students from all over the world.
