The Tenth World Harp Congress
17-23 July 2008, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

36 outstanding young candidates (age 9-21) from 27 countries have been selected to perform during the Focus on Youth Concerts. All candidates have received their invitation during the past few months.

The schedule and all the names will be posted soon on this site as soon as all candidates have confirmed their invitation.

The Focus on Youth Concerts will take place from Friday 18th July until Wednesday 23rd July 2008 in the ‘Bimhuis’ next to the congress venue. Daily from 10:45 to 12:15.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do I need to pay for the congress?
To perform at the Focus on Youth concerts, you have to be a student member of the WHC. The fee of $20 you may pay at arrival in Amsterdam. To join the congress you must buy a congress pass or single day tickets. All Focus on Youth- performers get discount for the congress pass. We have sent you an e-mail with this information and you should registered before 1 April 2008. If not, please check ‘registration’ at this website for more information.

How can I get tickets for my family and friends?

Can I still change my program?
After 1 April 2008 no more changes in the program can be allowed.

When will I get a harp?
Several harps will be available especially for the Focus on Youth Concerts from July 17th. As soon as you arrive please ask for the practicing schedule at the registration desk.

Where can I practice?
25 practicing rooms will be available in the conservatory at a 5 minute walk, where all the Focus on Youth concerts will take place.

How much time can I get for practicing?
You may try out your performing harp one hour at the day before your concert. Every day you may practice two hours at similar harps in the conservatory.

What kind of harps will be available?
Camac, Salvi and Lyon & Healy harps.

Will strings, stands, chairs, tuning keys, harptrolleys and machines be available?
On stage, stands and chairs will be available. Only for the congress harps, trolleys, strings and tuning keys will also be available.

If I bring my own harp: can I practice in the hotel or at the congress building?
Please contact us before you arrive with your harp and we will help with bringing your harp to the conservatory where you will be able to practice and you can store you harp safely. Contact your hotel or budget hostel in advance: not all hotels offer practicing facilities.

Please note that all the Focus on Youth Concerts will now take place at the main Hall of the Conservatory at a 5 minute walk from the Muziekgebouw.

Please bring your own strings, tuning key, harp trolley and machine with you and put your name and address on all your belongings!

I will come by car. Where can I park and how much does it cost?
There is a parking garage under the congress venue and the Mövenpick hotel with an easy access by elevators to the concert building. The costs are € 3,- per hour or € 30 per day. Two stops away from the congress venue is a ‘park & ride’ possibility where you can park as long as you want for € 5,50 per day (including a ticket for public transport). It is called Park & Ride Zeeburg. Exit S114 from highway A10.

When do I need to be there?
Of course we would be happy if you join the whole congress, but we advise you to be there at least one day before you play, to have time enough to try out your performing harp.

Who will put my harp on stage and tune?
We take care of the transport and tuning of the congress harps. You are not allowed to take a harp into another room. If you bring your own harp, please tell us in advance so that we make a plan with you how organize these subjects.

Is it allowed to make audio and visual recordings?
I am sorry but no recordings are allowed at all. All events at the congress will be recorded on DVD which can be ordered.

Is there a place where I can sell my own CD or DVD?
The only possibility to sell your private CD or DVD is before, during and immediately after the concert in which you take part at the conservatory. Please contact the information desk in the conservatory.
